Montevideo: the sweet life

Little sister of Buenos Aires, capital of a small country caught between two South American giants, Montevideo still knows how to find its place, share its identity, and allow its unique culture to flourish.

Montevideo radiates a certain form of nostalgia and a version of the sweet life not found in any other South American city. Visit the Palacio Salvo, an emblematic building of the city and a jewel of Italian Gothic and Art Deco. Explore Plaza Independencia, the final resting pace of General José Artigas, around which are concentrated all the important buildings of the Uruguayan capital. Linger over a cup of mate, the famous local tea, on the Rambla at sunset, after a day spent relaxing on the warm sandy beach. Sit in one of the little cafés on CalleSarandi, in the heart of the old city, before embarking on a sight seeing walk to the most beautiful historical monuments in the various districts of the capital.

Every day, in the ancient streets and squares, you can listen to musicians and watch street performers put on shows for anyone who takes the time to listen and watch. The thriving contemporary art scene in Montevideo will astonish you, as will going to a former prison to admire the latest creations. If you want to escape the urban frenzy, you can find refuge in the national park of CaboPolonio, which you can explore on horseback, in a 4×4, or on foot, and which is home to hundreds of sea lions and penguins. If you find yourself in Uruguay in the middle of July, you might even see a pod of whales! And if you're looking to party, for glamour and glitz, the villages of Punta del Este and José Igniacio, with their chic restaurants and trendy shops, are dream destinations.
