The Central Market: colourful and flavourful

At the heart of San José, the Mercado Central is a concentration of Costa Rican crafts, souvenirs, vegetables, and exotic fruits.

The main covered market, which is the largest in the capital, was established in 1880 and continues to thrive every day, except Sunday, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. The people of San José, as well as tourists and casual visitors, flock to more than 200 shops and stalls for very comprehensive shopping: exotic fruits, vegetables bursting with vitamins, fresh meat and fish, colourful hammocks, locally produced coffees, spices, clothing, souvenirs, etc. All around, small cafés, called sodas in Costa Rica, serve home cooking with typical dishes like casado, which consists of rice, red beans, salad, and meat. Taken as a whole, the market gives a very good condensed overview of Costa Rican daily life, its diversity, and its natural, cultural, and culinary crafts.
