Pack up your worries and take off!

Does the term ‘rat-race' cause you anxiety? Is ‘routine' not part of your vocabulary? Here are five ideal destinations for travelling on a whim.

Without going as far as ‘dropping everything to raise penguins in Antarctica', lately, you have been craving adventure and wishing to sign out of this ‘routine' that is not really you. You have only one obsession: to leave, immediately, regardless of the destination, provided it is synonymous with a change of setting. To a town, on a beach, or in the desert, quickly grab your backpack and take off!

St. Petersburg

Right off the airplane, the shock is total. In winter, St. Petersburg is covered with a thick coat of snow that is very often accompanied by temperatures around -10°C. In your backpack, a fur hat and gloves are essential. But that's a minor discomfort when discovering a city with a fascinating history that is very rich in culture, and where you will no doubt discover what is meant by ‘Slavic grandeur'.

Wadi Rum Desert

Wadi Rum is one of those places that really does seem ‘out of this world'; a desert of ochre sand and sandstone cliffs, where civilisation is entirely (or almost) absent. For crossing the vast expanse of sand, a good guide and a 4×4 will be needed. When you are in the middle of the desert, take the time to stop in this special atmosphere and recall that, ultimately, man is but a very small thing.

Koh Lipe

Head now to Koh Lipe, a little island paradise in the Andaman Sea, a few hours from Bangkok. In your suitcase, no frills, only the essentials: your swimsuit. It is true that the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters of this small piece of land must be earned. After a short flight, you will need to rent a speedboat before stepping onto its soil. But regardless, the island is well worth a visit and, after all, you wanted to travel simply, right?

Cirque de Mafate

The natural Cirque de Mafate, on Réunion Island, is well known to seasoned hikers, who can explore 140 kilometres of trails. The place is only accessible on foot (or by helicopter), but once there, breathe in the fresh air and look around you—the scenery is breathtaking. A bit of advice: consider taking your compass (or, more prosaically, a smartphone and GPS) as all guides will tell you that your legendary sense of direction will not suffice. Here, you will understand why Réunion is nicknamed ‘the green island'.

Tokyo

The largest metropolis in the world is also the most exotic. You will notice it as soon as you arrive on Japanese soil where, at the airport, everything is calm, tidy, and almost pure white. The neighbourhoods and streets of the city are practically another world. Western codes are discarded, from the little restaurants where everything becomes a ritual, to the untranslated street signs, which are a good excuse to get lost in the city. Just remember: ‘Michi ni mayotte imasu' (‘I'm lost').
